What Weather and Water Do to an Adhesive

The adhesive was tested in a laboratory and lives in the weather. The gap between the two is the subject of this page.

A pressure sensitive adhesive is specified indoors: a temperature, a dwell time, a peel figure read in a conditioned room. A wrap spends its life outdoors: dew at dawn, a wet quiver, a cold November morning, a hot truck in August. The question this page reads is what the weather actually does to the bond, and the answer is narrower than the fear of it.

What water does, and what it does not do

Water does not dissolve a cured pressure sensitive adhesive, and a wrap that went on a dry tube stays on through dew and rain. What water does is work on the edges: the seam and the trimmed ends are the two places where the film's hold is thinnest, and water standing at an edge migrates under it by capillary action over hours, not minutes.

The weather that matters is therefore the weather that sits on an edge, which is why the forecast worth reading is the one for the place the arrows will stand, not the county. What cold does to the bond

Cold stiffens the adhesive and slows its flow, which is the property that lets it wet out a surface in the first place. A wrap applied to a cold tube on a cold day bonds to the cold skin of the shaft rather than to a surface the adhesive could flow into, and the bond that results is the one that lifts at the seam a week later.

The remedy is temperature, and it is cheap: warm the tube, apply indoors, let the bond set at room temperature before the arrows go outside. The cold-weather half of the problem is the application-day version of what surface preparation says about a contaminated one: the adhesive bonds to whatever is there, including cold.

What heat does, coming back the other way

Heat is the way the film leaves, and the same heat is a failure mode if it arrives uninvited. A wrap left in a closed car in August sees temperatures that soften the adhesive enough to let the film slide on the tube, which is how a wrap creeps and why a quiver belongs in the shade. The removal half of the property is the feature the register reads in removing a wrap with heat.

What the bench does about it

Three habits cover the whole table: apply indoors, keep the quiver in the shade, and check the seam after a wet day rather than after a dry week. The first prevents the cold bond, the second prevents the creep, and the third catches the edge before the water has done a season's work in a weekend.

None of the three costs anything but attention, which is the point: the adhesive's weather problems are problems of edges and temperatures, and edges and temperatures are exactly the things a bench can control.

What this page does not claim

No peel figures at stated temperatures, because the desk holds no film to test. What it holds is the mechanism: a pressure sensitive adhesive is a solid that flows, and everything the weather does to it is a question of how fast it is flowing on a given day. The figures the desk does stand behind are kept, with their dates, in the spec table.

The archer who reads the mechanism once stops fearing the rain and starts minding the edges, which is the useful half of everything this page can offer. A wrap that went on a warm, clean, dry tube and lives in a shaded quiver will outlast its print; a wrap that went on cold in January and sleeps in a hot car will fail on schedule, and the schedule was written the day it was applied, not the day it lifted.

That is the whole of it, and it is less than the folklore suggests. Weather is a maintenance question, not a mortal threat, and the adhesive that was honestly applied spends its life shrugging off the days that the folklore said would kill it. The bench that knows the mechanism keeps the three habits and forgets the rest.
